The now thirty-one-year-old Annie Baker became just that in 2009 with Circle Mirror Transformation (see links below), about a group of generally unremarkable people who become personally involved in each others lives while playing theater games at a community center. It isn't always easy to pinpoint exactly what there is about the style, craft or even the perspective of a young up-and-coming playwright that makes them the darling of the critics as well as the public almost overnight. This new production has unapolegetically mounted the play intact without cuts to text or any of those pauses (look closely, and you'll see things happening throughout all of them). This prompted an apologetic letter by the company to its subscribers. Quite a number of Playwrights Horizon regulars walked out at the intermission, feeling the play was too long and didn't need so many long pauses. It nabbed the 2014 Pulitzer for Best Drama and is now getting another production at the Barrow Street Theater, a downtown venue that seems an ideal choice for attracting new fans to Baker's work.įortunately, the new production is again helmed by Sam Gold and with the same cast. We've also added Baker to our Playwrights Album -Īnnie Baker's play was long - but it also made a long-lasting impression. Uptown at the Signature Theater, Annie Baker's latest play, Original cast member Matthew Maher will continue as Sam.

Kyle Beltran now plays Avery, Brian Miskell Skylar/The Dreaming Man and Nicole Rodenburg,Rose. The continued success of the play at Barrow Street has turned this limited second run into an open run. The Flick had its world premiere as part of Playwrights Horizons' 2012-13 season and features a creative team made up of David Zinn (scenic and costume design), Jane Cox (lighting design), and Bray Poor (sound design).įor tickets and more information, click here. The Flick Another Chance to see The Flick Septemupdate
#ANNIE BAKER THE FLICK MOVIE#
Set in a run-down Massachusetts movie theater, The Flick follows the heartbreaks, loneliness, and battles of three underpaid employees as they sweep up popcorn, mop the floors, play "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon," and tend to one of the last 35-millimeter film projectors in the state. Matthew Maher, who originated the role of Sam, remains with the production.

They replace original cast members Aaron Clifton Moten, Louisa Krause, and Alex Hanna, respectively. The drama, directed by Tony Award winner Sam Gold, will welcome Kyle Beltran ( Gloria) as Avery, Nicole Rodenburg ( Inside Amy Schumer) as Rose, and Brian Miskell ( The Undeniable Sound of Right Now) as Skylar/The Dreaming Man.

The ongoing off-Broadway production of Annie Baker's Pulitzer Prize winner The Flick will welcome three new cast members beginning September 1 at the Barrow Street Theatre.
